The infographic above shows changes in Fortune 500 from 2009 to 2019. We look at the top 10 companies by revenue in the first 2 maps while we compare the total number of companies by country in the last chart. Data is extracted from Fortune website.

What has changed?

  • The most obvious change is that there are more Chinese companies now in the list both in the top 10 and in terms of total number of companies in top 500. Number of Chinese companies in top 500 increased from 37 to 119 from 2009 to 2019 where the same number for all other countries in consideration reduced. There are 3 Chinese companies in the top 10 in 2019 compared to 1 in 2009 and Sinopec climbed to rank 2 from rank 9.
  • Much of the growth in Chinese companies is attributed to the tremendous growth that Chinese economy has seen as a whole.
  • Walmart overtook Shell as the largest company.
  • Most of the companies in top 10 are from Oil & Gas industry and this hasn’t changed much in the 10 years in consideration.
  • Volkswagen has been a new addition in the top 10 which joins Toyota as the other automobile company in the top 10 list. It is not a big surprise that Toyota has remained pretty stable in the last 10 years and most of this is thanks to the strong stable demand for their cars and a stable business model. It needs to be seen though how well Toyota adopts in the next decade given expected disruptions in the automotive sector.
